As Pentecost approaches, churches across the United States in Olivet Assembly USA network prepare to commemorate this pivotal moment in Christian history through special Sunday services, prayer gatherings, and spiritual retreats. In unity with the World Olivet Assembly, members reflect on the powerful coming of the Holy Spirit, which marked the birth of the early Church and ushered in a new era of God’s redemptive work.
According to Acts 2:1-4, the day of Pentecost unfolded as the apostles gathered together in Jerusalem ten days after Jesus’ ascension into Heaven:
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (NIV)
This outpouring of the Holy Spirit fulfilled the ancient prophecy spoken through the prophet Joel, as cited by the Apostle Peter in his Spirit-empowered sermon:
“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.’” (Acts 2:17-18)
In contrast to the Old Testament period—when the Holy Spirit only descended upon a few individuals for specific purposes, the Pentecost event signifies a turning point in salvation history. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s promise of the Holy Spirit was poured out on all believers—regardless of gender, ethnicity, or social class—fifty days after Easter. This marked the beginning of the Church era, where every disciple is empowered to live a Spirit-led life and participate in the mission of advancing God’s Kingdom.
“Day of Pentecost is truly significant time when we pray to see renewal and revival in our churches and members across the nation. It is the time to seek the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in our lives so we can proclaim and witness the gospel of Jesus Christ more boldly and without hindrance,” shared pastor Mark Spisak, general secretary of OA USA.
As we mark this year’s Pentecost, Olivet Assembly USA joins in prayer that the Holy Spirit will continue to move powerfully within our churches, ministries, and every believer’s personal walk with Christ. May the Spirit guide, protect, and embolden us as we proclaim the Good News of Jesus and seek to be faithful stewards of His Kingdom on earth.
